Internal Cooling, Faster Cycles

A system that enables efficient internal cooling of the container thanks to the recirculation of compressed air during blow molding.

DATASHEET

Reduce cycle time, improve quality.

In 2004 Techne developed a Fast cooling system based on air recirculation—technology included in electric extrusion blow molding machines—designed to reduce cycle time and improve final container quality.
This solution is suitable for both small bottles and jerrycans up to 30L.

Who it’s for:

Bottle manufacturers

To optimize production efficiency and improve packaging performance.

Jerrycan manufacturers

To reduce cycle time and increase jerrycan resistance.

Techne air circulation system for fast cooling

Air Circulation System.

The compressed air circulation system (Fast cooling) overcomes the limitations of plastic material and internal temperature inside the container. It transfers heat outward, quickly cooling the interior of the container as well.

Thanks to the recirculation system, the air entering the bottle has a temperature of about 20–25°C, while the exhaust air reaches about 30–40°C—an important difference compared to traditional cooling methods.

A major advantage of this system is reduced cycle time:

  • Small bottles: up to 5% cycle time reduction;
  • Jerrycans: up to 20% cycle time reduction;

    Differences from traditional cooling systems.

    In EBM machines, cycle time depends on carriage movement and mold cooling efficiency. In traditional systems, heat dissipates only through contact with the mold, but plastic is thermally insulating and retains heat, causing internal compressed air temperature to rise quickly.

    This can lead to internal container temperatures of 80–90°C, while the exterior reaches 30–50°C. To overcome this, Techne developed a more efficient cooling system.

    Even faster cooling process.

    For containers or jerrycans with thicker walls, Techne recommends, in addition to standard cooling, using a cross-flow heat exchanger (air/water) that uses chilled mold water to cool compressed air, blow nozzles, and mechanical components. Water enters the mold at 8–10°C and exits about 1.5°C warmer, then passes through the heat exchanger to cool the compressed air. The compressed air enters at 20–25°C and exits at 10–12°C before blowing, while exhaust air stays at 15–20°C.

    The result is faster cooling and a significant reduction in cycle time:

    • Up to 10% for small bottles;
    • Up to 40% for jerrycans;

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

    How does the Fast cooling system work?

    Techne’s Fast cooling system uses compressed air recirculation during blow molding to cool the container from the inside. This allows faster and more uniform heat dissipation compared to traditional mold-contact-only cooling methods.

    Is the system included in all extrusion blow molding machines?

    Yes, the compressed air recirculation system is standard on all Techne blow molders, while the heat exchanger is optional.

    How does air consumption change using the Fast cooling system?

    Recirculation increases compressed air flow during blowing, but thanks to the regulation valve and higher process efficiency, air consumption is optimized with no waste.

    When should a heat exchanger be combined with the Fast cooling system?

    It is recommended for very thick jerrycans or containers. A cross-flow air/water heat exchanger further cools compressed air, delivering an even greater cycle time reduction (up to 40%).
